Asante PCI Driver Installation for Windows NT
=============================================
This file contains instructions for installing the AsanteFAST 10/100 and/or
AsanteNIC-PCI driver for use with:
Microsoft Windows NT Server/Workstation 4.0
Microsoft Windows NT Server/Workstation 3.51
Driver Installation for Windows NT Workstation 4.0
---------------------------------------------------
The instructions require that you have installed Windows NT 4.0 without a
network adapter or driver.
1. Insert the Asante adapter into your computer, then power on the computer.
2. Start Windows NT 4.0.
3. Click the "Start" button.
4. Open the Settings menu and select "Control Panel".
5. Double-click the "Network" icon.
6. If you have previously installed a network adapter on the computer:
- Click "Adapters" in the Network window.
- Click "Add" in the Adapters window.
If you have NOT installed a network adapter on the computer:
- Click "Yes" in the Network Configuration dialog box.
- Select "Wired to the Network" in the Network Setup Wizard window.
- Click "Next" to continue.
- Click the "Select from list" button.
7. Click the "Have Disk" button in the Select Network Adapter window.
The Insert Disk window appears.
8. Insert the Asante Driver Disk into floppy drive A.
9. At the prompt, type the following:
A:\NT351&40
10. Click "OK".
The Select OEM Option window appears.
11. Select "AsanteFast 10/100 PCI Ethernet Adapter" or "AsanteNIC-PCI 10Mbps
Ethernet Adapter", as appropriate.
12. Click "OK".
The Asante PCI Adapter Setup dialog box appears.
13. Complete the installation by following the instructions provided by
Windows NT.
Driver Installation for Windows NT Server 4.0
---------------------------------------------
1. Install the Asante adapter in the computer.
2. Begin installing Windows NT Server 4.0 by following the instructions
provided by Windows NT.
3. At the prompt to start searching for a Network Adapter, click the
"Select from list" button.
The Select Network Adapter window appears.
4. Click the "Have Disk" button.
The Insert Disk window appears.
5. Insert the Asante Driver Disk into floppy drive A.
6. At the prompt, type the following:
A:\NT351&40
7. Click "OK".
The Select OEM Option window appears.
8. Select "AsanteFast 10/100 PCI Ethernet Adapter" or "AsanteNIC-PCI 10Mbps
Ethernet Adapter", as appropriate.
9. Click "OK".
The Windows NT Server Setup windows appears.
10. Click "Next" to continue. Complete the installation by following the
instructions provided by Windows NT.
Note: If you require access to Netware servers, do the following:
1. Open Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Network icon.
3. Select Services.
4. Click Add.
5. Select Gateway (and Client) Services for Netware in the Select
Network Services window.
6. Click OK.
7. Specify the sources path of your NT files (D:\I386).
8. Click Continue.
9. Restart the computer.
Driver Installation for Windows NT 3.51
---------------------------------------
I. Windows NT Advanced Server 3.51
----------------------------------
There are two ways to install Windows NT Advanced Server 3.51:
- Express Setup
- Custom Setup
A. Express Setup.
-----------------
This setup will detect the DEC Ethernet driver if the AsanteFAST or the
AsanteNIC-PCI adapter is in the system. The installation consists of 3 steps:
1) Install Windows NT Server with the generic DEC Ethernet driver
2) Remove the generic DEC Ethernet driver
3) Install the Asante driver
Please DO NOT STOP THE INSTALLATION of the generic DEC Ethernet driver,
ALLOW THE SYSTEM TO FINISH THE INSTALLATION.
1) Windows NT installation with the generic DEC Ethernet driver.
a. Start Windows NT 3.51 Advanced Server Installation by running WINNT at
the CD-ROM driver prompt and after files are copied to hard drive then
restart the computer.
b. Upon restart select "Express Setup", the installation will detect your
hardware and press ENTER if everything is correct.
c. Select the destination directory on your hard drive.
d. More files will be copied then the computer will restart.
e. Upon restart enter your name, company name...
f. The installation detects DEC based adapter and installs the software.
g. "DEC DECchip 21140 Based Adapter Setup" window appears to select the
"Connection Type" :AutoSense(Default), 100Mbps, 100Mbps Full_Duplex, 10Mbps,
10Mbps Full_Duplex.
h. "Windows NT Setup" window appears to select the network protocol(s):NWLink
IPX/SPX Compatible Transport, TCP/IP Transport or NetBEUI Transport then
click "Continue".
i. Follow the instructions to finish the installation and restart the computer.
2. Removing the generic DEC Ethernet driver.
a. Open the Main icon.
b. Open Control Panel then Network icon.
c. In "Network Settings" window highlight "DEC PCI FAST Ethernet DECchip 21140"
as "Installed Adapter Cards" then click "Remove".
d. Click "Yes" on the next window to confirm the removal.
e. Click OK at "Network Settings" window and restart computer.
3. Installing the Asante driver.
a. Open Main icon, then Control Panel then Network.
b. Click "Add Adapter".
c. "Add Network Adapter" window appears , select "<Other> Requires disk from
manufacturer" and click "Continue".
d. At "Insert Disk" window type
"A:\WNT351" and press ENTER or click "OK".
e. "Select OEM Option" window displays "AsanteFAST 10/100 PCI Ethernet Adapter
and AsanteNIC-PCI 10Mbps Ethernet Adapter" as choices. Select the appropriate
adapter and click OK.
f. At "AsanteFAST Adapter Setup" window select the appropriate "Connection
Type": Twisted_Pair Half_Duplex or Twisted_Pair Full_Duplex for AsanteFAST
10/100 or Autosense, Twisted_Pair Half_Duplex, Twisted_Pair Full_Duplex or AUI
for AsanteNIC-PCI 10Mbps adapter and click OK.
g. Click Continue at "Network Settings" window to go to the next window to
select the protocols:NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport, TCP/IP Transport,
or NetBEUI Transport.
h. At "Network Settings" window click OK to select the Frame type either
"Auto Detected" as default or "Manual Detection".
i. Click OK and restart the computer.
B. Custom Setup.
----------------
1. Start the Windows NT 3.51 Advanced Server Installation by running WINNT at
your CD-ROM drive and after files are copied to hard drive then
restart the computer.
2. Select "Custom Setup" instead of "Express Setup"
3. The computer will detect your hardware and press ENTER if all the items in
the list are correct.
4. Select the destination directory on your hard drive to store
Windows NT 3.51 Server.
5. More files will be copied then click ENTER to restart the computer.
6. Continue with the NT Server installation:select "Server" or "Domain" at
the Windows NT Server Security Role, your license connection number, the
computer name, etc.
7. "Windows NT Setup" window reappears to let you select what components you
want to install:leave the "Set up Network" item checked then click "Continue".
8. "Network Adapter Card Detection" window appears: select "Do Not Detect"
then click "Continue".
9. At the "Add Network Adapter" window select "<Other> Requires disk from
manufacturer" then click "Continue". Type the correct path: A:\WNT351
at the following window.
10. At the "Select OEM Option" window select the appropriate adapter (AsanteFAST
10/100 Ethernet Adapter or AsanteNIC-PCI Ethernet Adapter) then click OK.
11. The "AsanteFAST 10/100 PCI Ethernet Adapter Setup" window or "AsanteNIC
-PCI 10Mbps Ethernet Adapter Setup" appears to select the Connection Type:
"Twisted_Pair Half_Duplex" or "Twisted_Pair Full_Duplex" for AsanteFAST
10/100 PCI Ethernet Adapter and "Autosense" or "Twisted_Pair Half_Duplex"
or "Twisted_Pair Full_Duplex" or "AUI" for AsanteNIC-PCI 10Mbps Ethernet
Adapter.
12. Click "Continue" to advance to the next window to select the protocols
:"NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport", "TCP/IP Transport" or "NetBEUI
Transport"
13. At the "Network Settings" window click OK to select the Frame type, either
Auto Frame Type Detection or Manual Detection.
14. Click OK then Restart computer.
II. Windows NT Workstation 3.51
-------------------------------
There are two ways to install Windows NT 3.51 Workstation: Express Setup
and Custom Setup.
A. Custom Setup.
----------------
1. Start the Windows NT 3.51 Workstation Installation by running WINNT at
your CD-ROM drive and after files are copied to your local hard drive then
restart the computer to continue the setup.
2. Select "Custom Setup" instead of "Express Setup"
3. The computer will detect your hardware and press ENTER if all the items on
list are correct.
4. Select the destination directory on your hard drive where you want to store
Windows NT 3.51 Server.
5. More files will be copied then click ENTER to restart the computer.
6. Continue with the NT Server installation:select "Server" or "Domain" at
the Windows NT Server Security Role, your license connection number, the
computer name, etc.
7. "Windows NT Setup" window reappears to let you select what components you
want to install:leave the "Set up Network" item checked then click "Continue"
8. "Network Adapter Card Detection" window appears: select "Do Not Detect"
then click "Continue".
9. At the "Add Network Adapter" window select "<Other> Requires disk from
manufacturer" then click "Continue" then type the correct path: A:\WNT351
10. At the "Select OEM Option" window select the appropriate adapter (AsanteFAST
10/100 Ethernet Adapter or AsanteNIC-PCI Ethernet Adapter) then click OK.
11. The "AsanteFAST 10/100 Ethernet Adapter Setup" window or "AsanteNIC-PCI window"
appears to select the Connection Type:"Twisted_Pair Half_Duplex" or "Twisted_
Pair Full_Duplex" for AsanteFAST 10/100 Ethernet Adapter and "Autosense" or
"Twisted_Pair Half_Duplex" or Twisted_Pair Full_Duplex" or "AUI" for AsanteNIC-
PCI Ethernet Adapter.
12. Click "Continue" to advance to the next window to select the protocols
:"NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport", "TCP/IP Transport" or "NetBEUI Transport"
13. At the "Network Settings" window click OK to select the Frame type, either
Auto Frame Type Detection or Manual Detection.
14. Click OK then Restart computer.
B. Express Setup.
-----------------
This setup will detect the DEC Ethernet driver if the AsanteFAST
or AsanteNIC-PCI adapter is present.
The installation consists of 3 steps: install Windows NT with DEC driver,
remove DEC driver and finally install Asante driver.
1. NT installation.
a. Start the Windows NT 3.51 Workstation Installation by running WINNT at
the CD-ROM driver prompt and after files are copied to your local hard
drive then restart the computer to continue the setup.
b. Upon restart select "Express Setup":the installation will detect your
hardware and press ENTER if everything is correct.
c. Select the destination directory on your hard drive.
d. More files will be copied then the computer will restart.
e. Upon restart enter your name, company name...
f. The installation detects DEC chip based adapter and installs the software
for it.
g. "DEC DECchip 21140 Based Adapter Setup" window appears to select the
"Connection Type" :AutoSense(Default), 100Mbps, 100Mbps Full_Duplex, 10Mbps,
10Mbps Full_Duplex.
h. "Windows NT Setup" window appears to select the network protocol(s):NWLink
IPX/SPX Compatible Transport, TCP/IP Transport or NetBEUI Transport then
click "Continue".
i. Follow the instructions to finish the installation and restart the computer.
2. DEC driver removal.
a. Open the Main icon.
b. Open Control Panel then Network icon.
c. In "Network Settings" window highlight "DEC PCI FAST Ethernet DECchip 21140"
as "Installed Adapter Cards" then click "Remove".
d. Click "Yes" on the next window to confirm the removal.
e. Click OK at "Network Settings" window and restart computer.
3. Asante driver installation.
a. Open Main icon, then Control Panel then Network.
b. Click "Add Adapter".
c. "Add Network Adapter" window appears , select "<Other> Requires disk from
manufacturer" and click "Continue".
d. At "Insert Disk" window type :
"A:\WNT351" and press ENTER or click "OK".
e. "Select OEM Option" window displays "AsanteFAST 10/100 PCI Ethernet Adapter
and AsanteNIC-PCI 10Mbps Ethernet Adapter" as choices. Select the appropriate
adapter and click OK.
f. At "AsanteFAST Adapter Setup" window select the appropriate "Connection
Type": Twisted_Pair Half_Duplex or Twisted_Pair Full_Duplex for AsanteFAST
10/100 or Autosense, Twisted_Pair Half_Duplex, Twisted_Pair Full_Duplex or AUI
for AsanteNIC-PCI 10Mbps adapter and click OK.
g. Click Continue at "Network Settings" window to go to the next window to
select the protocols:NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport, TCP/IP Transport,
or NetBEUI Transport.
h. At "Network Settings" window click OK to select the Frame type either
"Auto Detected" as default or "Manual Detection".
i. Click OK and restart the computer.
